GSAF Weapon Regulations

Overview:
One of the GSAF's most controversial political topics is their strict laws regarding the regulation of weaponry and weaponry development. A hotly debated and protested interest between core GSAF legislation and individuals on the volatile border worlds, the topic of gun control has divided legislation and proven to be one of the strictest, most imposed series of laws that the GSAF can enforce.
The Weapons Regulatory Law Summary:
Summarized as concisely as possible, the personal weapon restriction laws are summarized as, "You can only have what we say you can have." A series of bureaucratic paperwork to ensure that you are allowed to own a certain weapon based on its characteristics and your qualifications, which pins an appropriate level of usage with an appropriate level of trust and firepower.
The weapon development restriction laws are quite a bit more all-encompassing and more complex, but summarized by, "Whatever weapons manufacturers produce, it can't equate or exceed the power of the UGAF under any circumstances." The UGAF, the federal strong arm of the GSAF, keeps a militarily advantageous position over its subjects by asserting their technological superiority.
Rationale:
After the First Colonial War, it became apparent to the GSAF that, amongst several other reasons, the relative ease in access to weaponry from the firearms industry is what fueled the conflict's continuation. The Confederacy was supplied and armed by Heckler and Koch, Minerva's weapons were fresh creations from Fabrique Nationale, and Izhmash Industrial was supplying the I.R.A. The constant access to weaponry offered a chance for any side to continue to fight, making negotiations and other means of pacification improbable or unrealistic. As long as they had the tools to keep fighting and killing, they would continue.
Additionally, the GSAF's colonial expansion showed a sociological disposition that leaned in favor of colonial independence; that is to say, the further a colonist from the core system, the more likely they are to seek independence and rebel against a GSAF rule. Several examples of riots and rebellion violence along the outer ridges of colonized space only further the hypothesis, and quelling armed uprisings is not only costly in time and money but also UGAF lives.
The GSAF, while encouraging private enterprise and technological innovations, felt that any technological innovation in weapons technology that usurps their own would force an unacceptable edge against them. If a company managed to release a weapon that was more powerful than the most powerful army in colonized space, then that would be a threat to the GSAF, if not the wellbeing of the galaxy as well.
In order to guarantee their own technological superiority on the battlefield, and thus guarantee the security of colonized space as a whole, the UGAF must maintain an advantage over lesser forces, local military, private military, or otherwise. By both limiting new weapon designs and accessibility to firearms, while leaving room for their own technical innovations, the UGAF asserts its superiority over all other forces in colonized space, able to quell any conflict wherever it may arise.
Legislation to Ban All Firearms:
In both the past and the present, some legislation has put pressure on the GSAF to outright ban the possession, manufacturing, and usage of firearms by any non-UGAF forces. However, motions for this legislation have repeatedly failed, due to several reasons, including the impractical necessity for a suitable UGAF security force in every and all colonies, the economic impact of dissolving the lucrative arms industry, and popular support for self-defense initiatives.
Firearms Manufacturer Attitudes regarding the Laws:
For the most part, the Firearms manufacturers are disappointed, but compliant with the laws seeing as they have no other choice than to comply. While innovation has been a major factor in staying competitive in an industrial market, knowing that the advanced designs will be denied, if not stolen outright, by the GSAF/UGAF is a slap to the faces of the corporate research and development teams. However, it should be noted that even without new designs or weapon models, sales and demand still increase over time, so companies still thrive off their older designs.

Failure to comply with the weapon regulation laws has a variety of consequences, depending on the size and severity of the crimes committed.
Individuals who fail to comply with the weapon regulation laws on personal ownership and operation may be confiscation of the weapon, and charges for illegal possession of the weapon depending on the severity of difference in ownership.

The company would be immediately shut down, all workers who participated in or knew of the theft will be immediately charged at a federal level of prosecution for stealing federal property, tampering with federal property, violation of the terms of firearms production, abuse of their license to produce firearms, and the attempted duplication of top-level secret federal technology for their own devices. All those charged, the company CEO's, managers, and workers involved alike, would be relocated to a high security federal prison, and imprisoned for life.
